DAN FOUND himself standing before a very scandalized brother, cheeks warm.
“Well, uhm. Wow,” Conner barely made out. His arms were folded across the wide expanse of his chest, the emerald green shirt stretching nicely over his biceps. The color combined with his rich red locks did much for his tanned skin. Dan was confident he would pale in comparison to his brother’s good looks. Forcing away those thoughts, he focused on Conner, who crossed over to Dan to fully take in his appearance, which included his hair twisted in some funky braid that Shelly had managed. “Shelly?”
“Yes, of course. Well? What do you think?” Dan spun around dramatically.
“Uhm” was all Conner said.
“Oh, come on, Conner. I know you’re not gay or even the least bit in touch with your feminine side, but you could say something.”
Conner’s tongue-twister moment was starting to make Dan nervous. He trusted Shelly. She knew what looked good on him. All he needed was a confirmation from a guy’s perspective, even if it had to be his brother. Aiden wasn’t there, had gone to his home, to the hospital, or to Mars for all Dan knew.
When Aiden had left, roaring away on his motorcycle, an Icon Sheene, he didn’t say when he would be back, if he would be back. He simply took off. Dan figured it was his version of self-preservation. Aiden was leaving to repair his shields and come back stronger, all-powerful and bulletproof. Dan smiled, remembering how rattled his kiss had left him. If he could make Dr. Aiden Kavanagh tremble from just a kiss, then he had nothing to fear when he went out on the floor that night.
Dan and Conner stood in one of his favorite rooms. Dan loved it because it was where he and his mother had often sat together, sometimes with his father and his brother, sometimes alone. The room was warm, inviting. Since it was nice outside, there was no need for the fireplace to be lit, but the plush leather chairs were roomy and comfortable and drew bodies to sit near it. The burgundy draperies gave off a soft glow from the sun-kissed windows. Beside his room and maybe the gardens, Dan felt most at home there, remembering where he and his mother often shared a laugh, told a tale about their day, or read a book or two. Conner knew his affection for this room and had asked to meet there before they all left for the evening.
“Little brother,” Conner began. Well, finally. Dan waited. “It does my heart good to see you look brighter. Forget the clothes. Forgive me, Shelly.” Conner glanced over apologetically and then returned his gaze quickly to him.
Has Conner claimed her yet? Dan wondered. Hell, had Shelly claimed him? Though Conner was a very powerful man and an even more powerful wolf, Dan wasn’t certain he would be the one ruling in that pairing. Smiling gently, he waited to hear what his brother had to say.
Conner stepped toward him. Placing his hands on Dan’s shoulders, he continued.
